Frequently asked questions

WHAT TYPE OF FUEL IS USED?

The fuel used in the fireplace is denatured ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, bioethanol, denatured alcohol or grain alcohol. It is a biofuel which can be derived from plants including corn, wheat, barley, and sugarcane. Please refer to our instruction manual for the correct name of fuel in your country.

Denatured Ethanol is a renewable resource when it’s burning there are no harmful emissions, so it’s very safe for the environment and the people who are using it with care and precaution according to the user manual.

HOW DO THE COCOON FIRES MODELS WORK?

Ethanol is poured into the combustion chamber and then placed inside of the fireplace. A long arm lighter is used to turn on the fireplace. You can then regulate or turn off the burner by a sliding mechanism.

Initially, the flame will have a blue colour, and will gradually change into an attractive orange/yellow flame compared to a wood fire flame.

Please click on the instructional video (how it works) to see how to install and operate the Cocoon Fireplaces.

HOW LONG DOES THE FIREPLACE BURN FOR?

The duration of the flame depends on the climate conditions and the height of the flame. This duration is reduced in an area with more air current. 1.5 liters can last for up to 5 hours.

HOW MUCH CO2 IS PRODUCED BY THE FIREPLACE?

The CO2 produced by the fireplace is compared to the one of a candle.

HOW MUCH DOES A UNIT COST?

Please see our “ Find a Dealer” for the name and address of your nearest dealer. You can also email Cocoon Fires directly to obtain a price.

DO THEY PROVIDE HEAT?

Yes, the Cocoon Fires designs have heat capture which enables the Cocoon to deliver beautiful ambient heat. The units produce approximately 3.0 kw which is the equivalent to a small to medium gas or electric heater.

HOW TO INSTALL?

The COCOON FIRES models are very easy to install.  See our assembly videos on our “How It Works” page. The units come complete and ready for installation.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER A COCOON FIRESPLACE?

COMBUSTION CHAMBER – CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
Remove any dust or particles from the Cocoon prior to burning as they may cause marks on the surface of the shell.

MAKE SURE THAT ALL PARTS HAVE COOLED OFF COMPLETELY BEFORE CLEANING.

The Chamber might have some build-up in the opening due to impurities in the fuel not burning 100% efficiently. Simply wipe with a dry cloth to remove any build-up. Make sure
the Sliding Lid for the Combustion Chamber slides correctly and fully after cleaning. Due to its direct and close contact with the flame, the combustion chamber surface might tarnish over time. Ensure there is no bioethanol spillage prior to ignition to avoid the fuel igniting and staining the interior of the shell. The spillage can simply be removed with a dry cloth.

STAINLESS STEEL MODELS – CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Remove any dust or particles from the Cocoon prior to burning as they may cause marks on the surface of the shell.

MAKE SURE THAT ALL PARTS HAVE COOLED OFF COMPLETELY BEFORE CLEANING.

To remove dust and maintain the surface:
· Use a dry cloth. Only use non-abrasive cloths; microfibre cloths are ideal.
· Use Bioethanol (denatured alcohol) or Acetone (concentrated alcohol).

DO NOT use chemicals or cleaning products on the Cocoon (even the ones marked as suitable for stainless steel material) as it may react to heat and cause tarnish.

Please Note: The Stainless Steel finish could tarnish over time. Therefore, a yearly marine stainless steel polish (done by professionals) is recommended.

MATTE BLACK & MATTE WHITE MODELS CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Remove any dust or particles from the Cocoon prior to burning as they may cause marks on the surface of the shell.

MAKE SURE THAT ALL PARTS HAVE COOLED OFF COMPLETELY BEFORE CLEANING.

To remove dust or any stains caused by spills:

  • Use a dry cloth. Only use non-abrasive cloths; microfibre cloths are ideal. It is very important to never use a damp cloth or any liquid to clean the matte black and matte white parts. · DO NOT use any chemical or cleaning products on the shell.

Please Note: Be careful not to spill any bioethanol on the matte black and matte white parts of the Cocoon as it may tarnish the surface.

The matte black and matte white ranges are designed for internal use. The models can be used externally, however, exposure to rain, moisture or salt in coastal areas over prolonged periods could cause deterioration to the surface. The product must be stored internally after use externally. NEVER leave the model outside in the elements overnight!

DO THE COCOON FIRES MODELS REQUIRE A FLUE?

No, the COCOON FIRES do not require a flue.
However, if the unvented decorative appliance is used in a small room where less than 200 cubic feet (5.7 m3) of air space is provided for each 1000 Btu per hour of unvented decorative appliance rating (considering the maximum burner adjustment), the door(s) to adjacent room(s) should be kept open or a window to the outside should be opened at least 1 in (25.4 mm) to guard against potential buildup of indoor air pollution. Do not use the unvented decorative appliance in a bathroom, a room where sleeping accommodation is provided or any other small room.
